About G-MIRM
World-class Training for the Minerals Industry.
Recognizing that safety is one area where companies can and should collaborate, Anglo American is making their highly-acclaimed and award-winning education program available to the whole industry to contribute to a systemic change in safety and risk management.
This course is the Global Minerals Industry Risk Management course, G-MIRM. It is aimed at anyone with a potential or actual responsibility for defining and managing site, operation or discipline approaches to risk management including General or Mine Managers, Superintendents, Plant Supervisors, etc.
Led by the University of Queensland, a global network of universities in major mining regions has been established to deliver this world-class program. In Canada, the course will be offered by MIRARCO at Laurentian University.
Who should attend?
- At a mine or project: General Managers, Mine Managers, Section Managers, Superintendents, Mine Captains, Plant Supervisors, Senior Technical Staff, Safety Managers and Safety Practitioners.
- Within a Division or Corporate Structure: Technical and Functional Staff (e.g. Rock Engineering, Ventilation, Safety, Human Resources, Finance & Procurement).
- Long term / high hazard contractors at the appropriate level.
- Those involved in regulating the mining sector.

Glenn Lyle
Qualifications
Glenn Lyle is a Professional Engineer based in Sudbury, Ontario. Glenn earned a B.Sc and M.Sc in Mining Engineering from Queens University in Kingston. Throughout his career, he has dedicated 33 years to Vale (formerly INCO) in various capacities, most notably in engineering, operations and safety. In 2009 he joined the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) as a Research and Development Director, managing and seeking collaborative research projects. For the past eight years, he has worked as a Director with MIRARCO Mining Innovation, a not-for-profit applied research organization located on Laurentian University campus, delivering innovative solutions to mining industry challenges. With MIRARCO, Glenn works in the field of Health, Safety and Risk Management, with focuses in the delivery of the Global Mining Industry Risk Management Program (GMIRM) training, safety risk management facilitation, and the evaluation and recommendation of health and safety research projects. Glenn is also an active participant in the CIM and is currently Chair of the newly formed Health and Safety Society and an Executive Director of the Maintenance, Engineering and Reliability (MER) Society. Glenn is also part of the CIM Distinguished lecturer program.

As Director of Health Safety and Risk Management at MIRARCO, Glenn has worked extensively with Jim Joy, retired professor from the University of Queensland and originator of the Global Minerals Industry Risk Management Program (GMIRM) and Dr. Patrick Foster, Associate Professor in Mine Safety, Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom & Adjunct Professor, Laurentian University, Canada.

Jim Joy
Principal, Jim Joy & Associates Pty.
Jim Joy has worked for over 30 years in the global minerals industry as expert in the development of operational risk management.
From 1998 to 2011, he was Professor and Director of the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland in Australia.
Jim has had high level advisory roles for WMC, BHP Billiton and Xstrata, and until from 2007 to 2011 was the Anglo American Chair of Risk Management which involved development of their global HSE risk management education and training initiatives.
Jim’s work has been recognised by the AusIMM (2004 Occupational Health and Safety Award), the UK Institute of Chemical Engineers (2009 IChemE Innovation and Excellence Award in Health and Safety) and the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame (inducted at SME 2015).
Recent work has included being primary author of the 2015 ICMM guide on Critical Control Management and subsequent consulting with several global clients on the design, application and assurance of the approach.

Pat Bolger
MSc, BSc
Pat Bolger is an environment, health, safety, and risk management (EHSR) professional with 45 years of EHSR experience in industry, government, and consulting.
Pat has worked on mining projects throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in Peru, Chile, Guyana, Sweden, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, South Africa, India, Kyrgyzstan, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. He has also supported projects remotely, in Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Grenada, Ghana, and Nigeria.
As a result of his global experience, spanning 6 continents, Pat has worked under a wide range of legal, social, and political frameworks. He has a valuable appreciation of different multicultural perspectives for resolving environment, health, safety, and risk management issues.
Pat has 19 years of industrial EHSR experience, working in the mining and power generation sectors (Inco Limited, Inmet Mining, and Ontario Power Generation – Nuclear). He spent 8 years working in environmental law enforcement with the Ontario government (Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Northern Development and Mines).
During the past 19 years, Pat has applied his extensive industry and government experience by working as a consultant, supporting organizations in managing a wide range of EHSR issues. Major focus areas include implementing governance processes and environment, health, safety management systems (ISO 14001 and ISO 45001), conducting audits, facilitating strategic / scenario planning sessions, implementing ecological and human health risk assessments and assisting multi-stakeholder teams with consensus building and conflict management.
Pat has been active in the field of EHSR education, including part time teaching at Canadore College and serving on a variety of advisory committees. Pat currently provides support at MIRARCO, in delivering the Global Mining Industry Risk Management course.

Richard (Rick) Wells
MS, CSP
Mr. Wells brings over forty years of experience as a mining industry professional, serving in multiple operational and staff roles. Working for a multi-national mining company, he has led high functioning teams in continuous improvement, safety cultural change and operational and environmental risk management. He has served in a leadership role on national mining safety committees and as an adjunct professor teaching safety management and incident investigation courses to numerous companies for Vincennes University.
Mr. Wells holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Management from Murray State University. He earned a Master of Management Science from Oakland City University. He also holds the Certified Safety Professional certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
